Seemingly every article about free agency mentions the Detroit Lions. They were aggressive. They were bold.

Most of the pundits praised general manager Bob Quinn for creating a strong offensive line in front of the franchise quarterback. “He’s building the team around his quarterback!” they shouted.

These same folks discussed his willingness to get the best players on the market while letting his own guys walk for collectively more money. And who didn’t love the Darren Fells signing? He picked up the right tight end for the right price, which should set the running game up for success.

But few are acknowledging the dark side. Did Quinn do enough to help the defense, a unit which ultimately hamstrung the offense and cost the team numerous games? Is the gamble on D.J. Hayden worth it? Even for such a cheap price? Can Akeem Spence and Cornelius Washington be better than last year’s depth pieces?

That’s where we spent most of our time this week. The hardcore sites handed out individual grades and analysis. And while we don’t shy away from talking about specific players, we kept the focus on the big picture. Will there be enough opportunities in the draft to bolster a lackluster defense?

Possibly. Possibly not. And there’s still the possibility that Quinn finds another starter in free agency now that the dominos are falling after Dont’a Hightower’s signing.

As always, thanks for listening! Please leave us a review wherever you listen and share with a friend.
